Handicapping

The B&D-only handicapping system beginning with the 2027 season.

Back to Club Bylaws
  1. B&D Rounds Only. Beginning in the 2027 season, a member’s B&D handicap will be determined by past B&D tournament scores. Scores from rounds played outside of the club will no longer count toward a member’s B&D handicap.
  2. Calculating the B&D handicap. A B&D handicap is determined by averaging the 3 lowest “differentials” from the member’s most recent 10 completed B&D rounds.
  3. Eligibility Begins in Round 3. A member must have 2 completed B&D rounds before becoming eligible to compete to win tournaments and side bets. Their handicap index for their 3rd round is determined by taking the average of the differentials from their first 2 B&D rounds. Any field-protecting strokes subtracted from that allowance will be determined at the committee’s discretion. In making that determination, the committee will consider all relevant factors, including, but not limited to, the member’s current SCGA index and low index.
  4. Provisional handicaps before 10 completed rounds. Until a member has completed 10 B&D rounds, the member’s 3 lowest available differentials will be used to determine the number of strokes received for a particular tournament, but the committee may subtract field-protecting strokes at its discretion. Once 10 B&D rounds have been completed, the member’s B&D handicap index has been established and will no longer be subject to adjustments by the committee.

If a member with an established B&D handicap index leaves the club for 1 year (i.e., 1 season) or longer, his index will be under a probationary period of up to 3 rounds upon returning to the club, during which the committee may adjust the number of strokes given.

2027 B&D System

How a New Member’s Handicap Develops

Rounds 1–2Build a record

Complete 2 B&D rounds. The player is not yet eligible for prizes or payouts.

Round 3Eligible to compete

Average the first 2 differentials and calculate the course handicap. Any field-protecting adjustment is set at the committee’s discretion.

Rounds 4–10Provisional handicap

Use the lowest 3 available differentials to calculate the course handicap. Any field-protecting adjustment is set at the committee’s discretion.

After 10 RoundsEstablished handicap

Average the lowest 3 differentials from the most recent 10 completed B&D rounds.

Committee review: Before a member completes 10 B&D rounds, the committee may apply a field-protecting stroke adjustment after calculating the player’s course handicap. The committee will consider all relevant information, including, but not limited to, the player’s current SCGA index and low index.

Worked Example

A New Member’s Round 3

This example shows how Bylaw 3 could apply when the committee determines that a 2-stroke field-protecting adjustment is appropriate for a new member’s first eligible tournament.

First 2 differentials19.5 + 26.2Average = 22.85, rounded to 22.9
Course conversion22.9 indexSuppose this equals 25 strokes at the next course.
Illustrative committee adjustment25 − 2 = 23If the committee subtracts 2 field-protecting strokes, the player receives 23 strokes.

Illustrative example only. A 2-stroke adjustment is not automatic. The actual allowance depends on the course, tees, rating, slope, par, and the committee’s review of all relevant factors.
